CHAPTER 9 IS SO EXTRA THAT I HAVE SUMMARIZED IT FOR YOU.
YOU MAY COMMENT ON THE FACTS OR JUST FOCUS ON CHAPTER 10 IDEAS
1. Why is Winston working such long hours?
The enemy has changed from Eurasia to Eastasia, so all of the literature has to be rewritten.
2. According to The Book:
- The aim of modern war is to use up products but not raise the standard of living.
- The superstates are not really fighting with each other. The powers of each superstate are really warring against their own people to keep the structure of the society intact.
3. How is the current government different than any previous governments? What invention enables it to be like this?
The current government is able to watch all the citizens all the time because of the invention of the two-way telescreen. Previous governments were not able to watch the citizens all of the time.
4. Explain the organization of the Party.
Big Brother is at the top, followed by members of the Inner Party. The Outer Party comes next, followed by the proles.
5. Explain the concept of doublethink. Why is it so important to the novel?
6. What was your reaction when Winston and Julia were captured? Who turned them in?

5. The idea of double-thinking is having two individual ideas simultaneously and having strong belief in both. This is seen mainly in the slogans of the party such as "Freedom is Slavery." It helps the Party hide the truth behind their government.
ReplyDelete6. What was your reaction when Winston and Julia were captured? Who turned them in?
ReplyDeleteThey had it coming but during that moment when everything seemed so calm in their lives.. Winston continually predicted that he would be caught by the Thought police. I found it really surprising that when they said "we are the dead" and television repeated them, that was a turning point. Mr.Charrington, the shop owner, turned them in. He had tracked and tricked Winston by hooking him up with a room for his visits with Julia and the journal from the beginning. He symbolizes betrayal and deception.
All along it was certain that they would be caught and were being watched. It was interesting that it was allowed to continue for as long as it did. Why would Winston choose to rent from Mr. Charrington? It was obvious he would be turning him in. I think Winston and Julia knew all along but it didn't matter.
Delete2. I believe that Orwell is commenting on the military-industrial complex that is present in society today. We heavily rely on our military expenditures to help increase the production in our economy. This creates a cycle where we constantly want to be engaged in some sort of fighting with other people in order to fuel this desire for increased economic growth and output.
ReplyDelete5. Explain the concept of doublethink. Why is it so important to the novel?
ReplyDeleteDoublethink is a ploy by the Party. It is the ability to hold two completely contradictory ideas in ones mind at the same time; this makes it possible for the citizens to believe pretty much anything and everything that they're told. They might remember and even believe information that runs contradictory to the new information, but because of Doublethink, Big Brother and the Party can never be wrong. This is so important in the novel because it is the basis of their entire society; everything about the government revolves around Doublethink. The names of the Party's ministries is a prime example of this; Ministry of Peace is in charge of war.. Ministry of Truth rewrites the history and makes propaganda.. Ministry of Plenty deals with shortages.. Ministry of Love is focused on punishment.. the very names and groups that the Party functions on are based on the citizens believing in Doublethink. It is ultimately important in the end when Winston finally accepts that 2+2 can equal both 4 and 5.
5. Explain the concept of doublethink. Why is it so important to the novel?
ReplyDeleteDouble think is the process of holding two conflicting beliefs and holding that both of them are true. It's incredibly important to the party because it provides and example of just how powerful their grip is on the mind of the citizens. The ability to have your citizens beige two conflicting things is an incredibly powerful weapon allowing you to justify or claim nearly anything without fear of a contradiction. It plays extremely well into the novels theme of government control as the ability to manipulate the thoughts of the people in such an extreme way is trulls a characteristic of an extreme totalitarian society.
