  1. Describe the meeting between O’Brien, Julia, and Winston at O’Brien’s apartment. Do you trust Julia or O'Brien more? What does O’Brien know that surprises Winston? What could that mean?
Julia and Winston confess their hate for the Party and want to join the Brotherhood. Both of them were shocked that O'brien had the power to turn off a tele screen. They also tasted real wine for the first time unlike the Victory Brand items sold to the people. Winston asks several questions whether Goldstein or the Brotherhood is real. O'Brien validates his thoughts and gives him a copy of gold steins book. Both of them tell O'brein they will do anything for the Brotherhood except lose each other. I trust Julia because she is being blindsided by the hope O'Brien is delivering and the orders he is commanding. The thing that surprised Winston was that O'Brien knew the last line of the song Mr. Charrington taught Winston.

    1. I 100% agree with you about trusting julia more than O'Brien. O'Brien has been too illusive and I just think he's really sketchy.

  2. What does Winston tell Julia the real betrayal will be when they are caught? How does Winston say they can beat the Party?

When Julia and Winston get caught, Winston tells Julia that the real betrayal will be when they are forced to stop loving each other by The Party. Winston believes that through everything, if they can still have HUMAN feelings such as love, then they will have beaten The Party. It is cool to witness the protagonist in the story finally figuring out what he must accomplish to break the society.

    1. I think this scene was very important because it foreshadowed how hard it was for Winston to have the human feelings when he was going to be tortured with rats. I think it was interesting how mutual they felt on their goal of overthrowing the party.

  3. What does Winston tell Julia the real betrayal will be when they are caught? How does Winston say they can beat the Party?

Winston and Julia's relationship helps Winston "live" in the sense that he is going against Big Brother. When the time comes of being caught, Winston tells Julia that if they can't love anymore than they will have been overruled by the Party; but if they are able to still feels those feelings, they have won against the Party.

  4. Describe the meeting between Winston and O’Brien. Why is it dangerous? What do you think is really going on? What does Winston think this meeting means?

The meeting between Winston and O'Brien in the hallway at the ministry was very suspenseful due to the fact that O'Brien gave Winston his street address in view of a telescreen. Since O'Brien is a member the inner party and Winston a member of the outer party, the two could have serious consequences for intermingling about things they shouldn't be.
I think that Winston is simply looking to be enlightened about the brotherhood and O'Brien is his only hope.
When he met in the apartment, it was dangerous because they outright confessed their hatred against the Party and about how they wanted to join the brotherhood. Vocalizing these concerns could result in punishments for both Julia and Winston but they went forth anyway. After this meeting, Winston believes he is a part of something bigger. He's never agreed with the party so he thought with this meeting would come change.

  6. What does Winston tell Julia the real betrayal will be when they are caught? How does Winston say they can beat the Party?

Winston's affections for Julia are a double ended sword towards Big brother; it humanizes both Winston and Julia while simultaneously braking a major law. When the threat of their love being discovered becomes a reality, Winston tells Julia that if in the end, the two are still able to have feelings for each other, then they have successfully rebelled against Big Brother. However if they no longer had feelings for one another, then Big Brother would have been successful.
Winston says that they can use their love to manipulate the system.

  7. 1. How has Winston changed since he started coming to the little room with Julia? What does this mean?

Since Winston started coming in the little room with Julia, he began to no longer need the Party's "emotional crutches": he stopped drinking gin, his leg healed up, his coughing in the morning has stopped, he had put on some weight. His hatred and utter disinterest in life began to dissolve and he was not boiling in anger all the time. This means he was being to feel real human emotions, as he was able to relinquish his anger, and not the artificial feelings constructed by the Party.

  8. Describe the meeting between O’Brien, Julia, and Winston at O’Brien’s apartment. Do you trust Julia or O'Brien more? What does O’Brien know that surprises Winston? What could that mean?

Winston and Julia decide to go to O'Brien's apartment, where O'Brien turns off the tele screen. Winston explains that him and Julia are against Big Brother and want to join the Brotherhood. I trust Julia more, because I know more of her story and why she acts the way she does. O'Brien hasn't revealed anything about his involvement with the Brotherhood or how he rebels or anything, other than claiming to have a connection to the Brotherhood and saying he is willing to fight against the party. O'Brien knows the missing parts of the St. Clement's Church rhyme, which surprises Winston. This could mean that Winston was being monitored and that O'Brien knew that he was missing parts of the rhyme and repeating it frequently; this could also mean that O'Brien knows a lot about the past and is a member of the brotherhood.

  9. 4. Describe the meeting between O’Brien, Julia, and Winston at O’Brien’s apartment. Do you trust Julia or O'Brien more? What does O’Brien know that surprises Winston? What could that mean?

The meeting between O'Brien,Julia, and Winston, served as an introduction to the rare glimmer of hope that is the Brotherhood. The pair of Winston and Julia have long contemplated the Brotherhoods existence and are eerily surprised to see O'Brien as a possible member so high in the party organization. Not only does O'Brien have the ability to turn off the tele screen, but he also posses Emmanuel Goldstein's book and seems to advocate and believe in the revolution. The trust is mostly in Julia. While O'Brien is acting as someone not loyal to the party, he's still questionable and we have spent much more time with Julia and thus trust her more. O'Brien remembering the end to the nursery rhyme is what surprises Winston the most.

    1. I agree that Julia is more trustworthy. Winston and Julia asked if Goldstein and the Brotherhood actually exist, O’Brien gave them a positive answer but he is not trustworthy because he has not given them any information about his involvement with the Brotherhood.

  10. 3. What does Winston tell Julia the real betrayal will be when they are caught? How does Winston say they can beat the Party?

Winston says to Julia that the real betrayal when they are caught is if they're forced to stop loving each other. The only thing stronger than fear is love, which is what the Party capitalizes on to break down the society. Winston recognizes the destroyed emotions among the people and understands the way to beat the party is to have genuine feelings.

  11. 3. What does Winston tell Julia the real betrayal will be when they are caught? How does Winston say they can beat the Party?

Winston says that the real betrayal to the party is when they are forced to stop loving each other (more like him loving her, it was kind of a one-sided relationship). He truly believes that they can overrun the Party by feeling again, feeling other emotions besides devotion to the Party. Since they have dehumanized the citizens by removing human emotions, if they bring them back, Winston believes, they can beat the Party once and for all.
