Why is this significant?
2. Winston thinks that what he does is not forgery. What does he think it is?
3. What is Winston’s greatest pleasure in his life, and why is it so?
4. Describe the aim of Newspeak and how it works.
5. What does Syme’s describe as the ultimate aim of Newspeak? Do you think that could really happen?
6. Winston is at lunch when the message on the telescreen relates the good news about
increases in production, including that the chocolate ration has been raised to twenty
grams a week. Do you think Winston is the only one who remembers the truth?
7. What is facecrime? Give an example. Have you ever gotten in trouble for it?
8. What is the aim of the Party with regard to male-female relationships and sex?
9. What is the Party’s policy on marriage, divorce, and children?

7. What is facecrime? Give an example. Have you ever gotten in trouble for it?
ReplyDeleteFace crime is any expression that shows dissatisfaction with Big Brother. An example would be a little frown, unconcious look of anxiety, nervousness,or an eye roll. Face crime is a natural reaction and easily committed. It is very hard for winston to control his expression.
4. Describe the aim of Newspeak and how it works.
ReplyDeleteThe purpose of Newspeak is to constrict the range of thought in the society. In this language, words are taken away rather than added and the vocabulary gets smaller and smaller. The main goal of Newspeak is to make thoughcrime impossible by strictly defining each word.
1. What happens to the rewritten news articles after Winston puts them into the pneumatic tube?
ReplyDeleteWhy is this significant?
The news articles are completely changed after Winston is done editing them. Things like the date, the enemy being fought, and people involved are all subject to change as Big Brother sees fit. These changes are then accepted by the people as the truth even though it is a sort of false history. The significance is that the past can be changed and is ever changing. Thus, nothing is certain and Winston realizes that he actually has no idea what happened in history as compared to what was made up.
I agree with your statement. It kind of sucks how the society can't have the rule of freedom on press. They are unable to express the truth and what they believe the public should know. The proles make sure this happens so the citizens can read what they want them to read. This is put in place so they do not get overthrown or unwanted thoughts are put in the citizens minds.
Delete4. Newspeak attempts to limit the range and complexity of thought in the population in order to reduce dissent and ideas that go against the current status quo. This further allows the party to wield a stronger control over the population and to prevent any insurrections. This can also be observed with children reporting their own parents for thoughtcrimes.
ReplyDelete2. Winston thinks it was substitution of one piece of non sense for another. Also he thinks to call it forgery it would be thought crime.
ReplyDelete4. The newspeaks purpose is to narrow range thought in the world which will make thought crime impossible. Eventually everything will be explained by one word and all of its other meanings forgotten.
ReplyDelete3. Winston's greatest pleasure is actually his job, which is surprising but is understanding at the same time. He works at library which stores historical documents, and his job is to rewrite history. The party directs him how to change historical documents to fit their political agenda. He enjoys his job because he gets to learn about history while rewriting it.
ReplyDeleteIf you think about it Winston is almost like a scientist with history. He's constantly experimenting with different ideas of the truth and testing the forgeries he makes whilst changing it. His primary objective with his work seems to be to remember his own history, by linking together small things he learns through work and his own memories he gets closer to "victory".
Delete8. The aim of the party when it comes to sex is not for personal pleasure but only reproduction. They do not want people to enjoy the act, but rather, see it as a necessity to provide more people for society.
ReplyDeleteIt also seemed like the Party did not want people forming partnerships that it would not be able to control. So instead they made the act seem like something that was bad.
DeleteI agree completely with this statement. The government did not want citizens to get to involved in a relationship or "love" any other person/thing than their own government. The parties aim was to keep all the citizens in their own bubble who would only "love" big brother, and the government to keep any rebellion from happening, but what's ironic to me was if the citizens did rebel weren't they fighting for peace??? Like the government had said. "WAR IS PEACE"
Delete7. What is facecrime? Give an example. Have you ever gotten in trouble for it?
ReplyDeleteFace crime is any facial expression that represents disapproval, discontent, or discouragement of Big Brother. An example would be a scowl, eye roll, or any other face expressions that show discontent. I have gotten in trouble with my parents when I scowl at my parents in the middle of a heated argument. Face crimes are very easy to commit and Big brother uses them as a way to control citizens' thoughts.
9. What is the Party’s policy on marriage, divorce, and children?
ReplyDeleteThe Party did approve all marriages but for the sole purpose of procreating. Marriages were not allowed if the couple seem physically attracted to one another. The Party did not allow divorce but instead encourage separation in cases where there weren't any children.
3. Winston's greatest pleasure in life is his work. This is mostly due to the fact that he learns about the history that he is constantly changes and even finds dirt on the government that he hates.
ReplyDelete3. What is Winston’s greatest pleasure in his life, and why is it so?
ReplyDeleteWinston's greatest pleasure surprisingly was his work field. Reading the history that actually happened in their society was fascinating to him. He rewrote the history to fit what Big Brother had predicted would happen, but Winston already knew the truth. Throughout the process while working in the library of history he learned the truth of the "real" history.
